More than a few observed an awful similarity to these images and the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster, which happened while the book was prepping for publication. Moreover, an article I chose to publish years earlier in the local SF newsletter 'Westwind', written by John Alaxander, discussed the tragic inevitability of this kind of fatal accident and the necessity to steel ourselves to such. Finally, years later, visiting the Kennedy Space Center, I saw the huge memorial slab with the names of all the astronauts who'd died so far. What struck me as most heartbreaking was that there was so much room for more names, yet it is the price to be paid.
