I would observe that with the size of that "splash", the wind direction would not make much of a difference. That hole mist be at least o couple of kilometers across. The effect looks to be in the mega-tonne range. And this is just the first volley!!! WCJ

Hmmm looks like a big [multi-kilo-tonne] impactor, rather than "Bill the Boffin Bunny's"{pg 225] cosmic shotgun. First round to be followed by the "Shotgun"? And just where is our Erma right now? IIRC, this is not good for her family. WCJ

The ejecta would be a prompt danger, and the event is large enough to it threaten a fair size area, but the down wind has it's own hazards, I remember St. Helens.
