On the other hand, how often would starship tech specialists be expected to play solider? When I was in the AF, there was not war skills training, as we were expected to be techs or office weanies.

You'd've gotten refresher firearms training before the AF deployed you to an operatinal area. No one expects infantry level proficiency from support personnel, but they do have to be able to fight.
That said, this is unforgivably sloppy.

They're critically under supplied, and why waste training if you're not wasting supplies?
